Which is weird, because at the time I was like “Wow, look at that!”

Later, as I got more into real fitness, I realized that people who can shed fat quickly can be made to look super-fit, even if they don’t have much muscle mass (losing fat is MUCH easier than gaining lean muscle, pound for pound).

I’m not hating on Brad Pitt, just pointing out that low body fat, makeup, and lighting can go a long way.

I wouldn’t kick Mr. Keg-sitter out of bed.

Muscle is great and all, but I’m not a big fan of the super fit, no body fat (or body hair), every spare hour at the gym, no carb clones that gay guys are supposed to be and be attracted to. The dad bod (I hate that term) is way more attractive in my book. If you’re a guy that has one and you feel self-conscious about it, STFU YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL. Now, let’s go get some pizza and beer.

The thing is, hardly anybody looks like that (every hour at the gym, et cetera). But dude on the keg is kind of soft. If that’s how you like ‘em, then more power to you, I got tired of being a fatass and bought a bicycle and joined a CrossFit gym. So I’ve got a dad bod with some definition . (And the increased strength and cardio fitness definitely comes in handy during, shall we say, certain activities ...)

That’s true, I guess I’m used to seeing more of them than most because there are a LOT of them in gay bars. And the dad bod with some muscle is even better, for sure. I just wish the fit ideal wasn’t so forced on us as a community (by ourselves).

I actually am getting ready to join a gym again so I can drop some pounds and help my cholesterol go down. It was the only thing that was noted on my blood work, the bad cholesterol was bit high and my good cholesterol is low, together they’re still in the normal range. I want my stamina back, and I always have enjoyed lifting weights. I miss it. But I’m never going to be that low percentage of body fat guy, because food is delicious.

I wonder how many opponauts would be into a weight loss/fitness support group.

Hey man: check into CrossFit. Very athletic, very accepting community. It totally bombs.

I’ve thought about it, but I’m a little worried about injuries. I’m now in my early 40s and starting to develop problems in my left shoulder and my knees, and crossfit seems like it could cause joint problems.

I’m 51. Shoulders were a concern to me as well, as I was developing some rotator issues. But if you could see the folks who attend the CrossFit sessions go to, you’d see all sorts of ages and body types there. You just have to listen to the coach, but also listen to your own body. Use less weight on things and concentrate on form. And give yourself time. CrossFit is a wonderful thing.

Have you had any shoulder problems doing crossfit? Like I said, I love lifting but I’m a little worried about doing shoulder presses and such. I’ve been lucky and never had to deal with injuries, so I think it’s become a mild phobia.

I was definitely phobic going into it. I had a rotator cuff impingement , which is to say it hurt and limited my movement. That was the doctor’s diagnosis, BTW... CrossFit does a lot with Olympic weightlifting: cleans, snatches, jerks, et cetera. I’ve been at it around four months now, and I am maddened trying to keep straight the names of the barbell moves. My shoulder motion limit made it hard for me to even hold a length of PVC pipe straight up over my head. But it’s been getting better and I’ve been gaining strength. The key is to use light bars and light weight until you gain the fluidity and the motion and get the moves down.

I was also phobic about my lower back, having suffered a UPS injury 20 years ago, and a number of back spasms since...

I’m a fan. It works all of your body, rather than isolating muscles like you would at a Gold’s Gym, or similar. Very effective at gaining shoulder, back and trunk strength, along with cardiovascular capacity. And all of these, are great for stamina and enjoyment during certain intimate activities and, I might add, it makes for a satisfying glance in the mirror when you get out of the shower.

When I started, I also got serious on my bicycle, so I pedal to the gym, do the CrossFit Workout Of the Day (WOD), then pedal to work. So I get lots of cardio, plus the CrossFit.

If you listen to your body, and if the CrossFit teacher/coach is any good, there’s really nothing better for your body.

Wellll... I’m about 23 miles from work, so I don’t know if I’m up for that long of a bike ride. Also we just got 8 inches of snow. I did notice a crossfit gym a couple of blocks away from work, though. Maybe I should check it out.

Please allow me to encourage you to do that. My gym has new members sign up for a Basics course that meets for two weeks, then turns us loose in the WODs.
